This is another exposition set-up in that school dances are a thing at Hill Valley High, plus some foreshadowing for when he plays as part of the band for the ‘Enchantment Under The Sea’ school dance.

Everything about the BTTF trilogy is ‘call and response’.

Also, there is another piece of writing in this (possibly suggested by Spielberg – one of the executive producers) that you will also find in George Lucas’ related work…

“Doc, you’re my only hope.”

Which references Princess Leia’s plea to Obi-Wan ‘Ben’ Kenobi from Star Wars (1977) and to a lesser extent Miranda’s plea to Ben in the LucasArts game Full Throttle (1995).
