I love BJM too. And the numbers on BoxOfficeMojo say BUDGET $13m vs. B.O. $22, which would be a modest failure (+/- $10-15m loss). But I agree – in this case it was a first feature script from an incredible voice.

If I were to write the article today, I’d probably use a different example. It’s debatable whether anything associated with the name “John Malkovich” would be high concept. ;-)

Great piece Karel, thank you. Although I’m not sure why you say Being John Malkovich was a failure. Its box office made 2.5 times its budget, and it received critical acclaim from Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and by Roger Ebert, amongst others. And I loved it so there’s that.
