Yes, we use the ideas entered by our readers and sell them to Hollywood. They pay about $1.2 million on average for a good idea. You'll probably see yours in cinema within the next 8-10 months. ;-)

Excellent article on loglines =-)

Here's a logline for ya: "A lonely swordsman who can slow time saves the life of a hunted woman whose presence nullifies all magic, then vows to protect her from those that would see her dead as they attempt to thwart the genocidal plans of a tyrannical, lightning-wielding god-king who wants her dead."

It's a short logline of my latest fantasy novel THE LAST SOOTHSAYER which you can view HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Last-Soothsayer-tale-blood-love/dp/1516981960/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440579173&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Last+Soothsayer

Only 25 words? (Gulp.)

Being the hyper-analytical type (I would prefer to be super creative), I have collected nearly 600 loglines for films in a spreadsheet, loglines for scripts that actually got made into movies. About 60 % of them were 25 words or less. Over 85% were 30 words or less.

So it's a tough, but not unrealistic goal to strive for.

BTW: Karel's logline for "Jaws" is 131 characters long -- short enough to fit into a twitter ---another goal to strive for.

In reply to <a href="https://www.thestorydepartment.com/logline-it-the-art-of-writing-great-loglines/#comment-332653">Steven Fernandez</a>.

Hey Steven, thank you so much for your comment.

Don't worry too much about struggling with your own concepts. The main thing is that you KNOW you're struggling. It shows you have an awareness of what works and what doesn't. The problem is mostly that people believe they have great concepts/loglines.

The day you come up with the high concept idea, you will find it easy to write the logline.

Also, assessing your own work is the hardest thing one can do. I always liken it to operating on yourself...

That good logline writing facilitates the writing of good, solid, story concepts - I have to agree. In my own case, while I am great at critiquing and suggesting solid improvements to other people's loglines, I still remain a bit behind at writing good loglines for my own concepts. This is partly because my plots tend not to be simple and/or involve convention-breaking characters or events. None the less, Karel's formula is something to get back to and work up from.
