The first job I got, I didn’t say a word for six weeks and every day I, I would go home and think I was going to get fired that day… I was so scared, and so shy, and so inhibited… ‘

Charlie Kaufman, the flesh-and-blood half of the Kaufman brothers, gives an endearingly awkward, viscerally honest screenwriting masterclass at the Göteborg International Film Festival on the art of surviving as a writer, the impossibility of Hollywood romance in everyday life, and the value of personal honesty in your art.

Producers are both revered and maligned in the industry – described as both facilitators and gatekeepers, enablers and note-givers. But they’re some of the hardest working people on the team, navigating the money and the politics that makes everything else possible.

The Hollywood Reporter sits down with six top awards season filmmakers — Peter Chernin, Eric Fellner, John Lesher (Birdman), Marc Platt, Cathleen Sutherland (Boyhood) and Emma Thomas (Interstellar).

Director George Miller has made 10 films in 36 years – and four of them are about The Road Warrior. He discusses the changing landscape of cinema, the challenges of finding creative material in a franchised sequel, the extraordinary advantages conferred by advancing cinematic technology, and the euphoric purity of the chase scene.

‘I grew up as a big fan of movies. I love movies. Movies felt like this big, sacred, really cool thing… Movies felt like this endless library of really cool stories… and I came into it right when everything stopped being possible. The modern market is getting increasingly frightened of this…’

Rising star Max Landis, writer, director and producer of Chronicle, sits down to discuss the the Millennial experience of coming into the film industry on the far side of the digital revolution, utilizing a few well-placed f-bombs on the way.

In one sense, he argues, it offers a landscape of near-infinite freedoms: ultra-low cost filmmaking, unprecedented technological abilities, incredibly powerful distribution platforms.

And yet, there’s a sense of overwhelming panic, fear and greed: the contracting of the film industry into tentpole mega-budget films with too much money and too little plot, and indie films on ever-tightening budgets and theatrical releases.

He discusses his start in TV, his move to films and his recent adaptation of the Shakespearean classic Much Ado About Nothing, which was entirely shot in his house (between helming blockbuster films) with a selection of eager-to-help friends (many of whom happen to be major TV and film names).

Writer-director Alejandro Iñárritu has had enormous success with a handful of exquisitely crafted films – Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, and Biutiful. Even though most widely known for his filmmaking, Alejandro’s education began in theatrical production, which he drew on to create the critically and commercially successful Birdman, continuing a pronounced trend of filmmakers using intensely personal experiences to unlock rich, unexpected stories like Whiplash and St Vincent.

Alejandro talks to David Poland about the journey, about his depression leading to Birdman, the production, and more.
