THE LEGO MOVIE (mandatorily written in all caps, on pain of death) cashed in on the mass anticipation surrounding its release and broke a record $69.1 million on its opening weekend, outstripping even Disney’s powerhouse Frozen ($67.4 million).
Though one might question the authenticity of a movie designed to cash in still further on the IP of the world’s most profitable toy franchise, the screenwriting duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are quick to point out its strengths – such as its star studded cast, utilization of the LEGO franchise’s native love of genre, and how the popular children’s toy integrates with the relationship between creating and consuming.
Truly, a movie that ‘hugs you into submission’.
