Ira Glass is a bit of a polymath – an iconic radio personality on This American Life, a novelist and producer, he has been instrumental in the success of many others – inciting novelist David Sedaris’ explosive rise to fame by inviting him to read on his radio show, and co-writing and producing comedian Mike Birbiglias’ film Sleepwalk With Me.
In a short but sweet videographic, Ira talks about the difference between raw talent, developing skill, and the sense of taste that tells you when your work isn’t quite what you wanted it to be.
I watched this and it really makes me reflect on how easy it is to feel frustrated when what I create does not match the quality I can already recognize in others. I can relate to that gap between having good taste and not yet being able to fully express it in my own work.
